Belize's Northern Belize
Northern Belize
Vast sugarcane fields growing alongside the paved Northern Highway and efficient multipurpose farms rolling along side the back roads of Mennonites, this is the Northern Belize most commonly seen by visitors. However, explore just a bit further and you will discover the vast expanses of jungle in the hilly west, and mangrove swamps and saline lagoons along the Caribbean shoreline, that make Northern Belize one of the most enticing regions in the country. Here, the beautiful Maya site of Lamanai, occupied for at least 3200 years, and the breathtaking scenery and birdlife of the New River, entertain curious eyes of all interests and backgrounds.
The far west of the region brings more delights, boasting some of the largest swaths of tropical rainforest in Central America, and several fine eco lodges offers visitors exquisite accommodations in the serene isolation of this untouched forest. Visit the remote fishing village of Sarteneja to embark on your trek through the Shipstern Nature Reserve, or stay in the comfortable farming village of Orange Walk before exploring the beauty of the New River and Lamanai.
