Chile's Easter Island
Easter Island
One lone Easter Sunday in 1722, Dutch Admiral Jacob Roggeveen and his brave crew found themselves in an overwhelmed state of awe, apprehension and admiration as they first set eyes on this yet undiscovered solitary island 2300 miles from the Chilean coastline. Today, the towering stone figures invoke feelings much the same amongst those who visit this inspiring island.
These intriguing Moai statues, as well as many of the other fascinating facets that make Easter Island a welcoming place of inspiration, are the gift of the Rapa Nui people who have inhabited the island since the 4th century. Their name, meaning Peace Loving and Hospitable People, has proved true throughout the ages as it was documented by the Spanish, British and French fleets who visited the islands. Today, find the inhabitants of the mysterious Easter Island just as warm and receptive as you explore the many treasures unique to this remote gem.
Hike the towering volcanoes responsible for the islands creation, or simply gaze at the statues in wonder of how a people with no use of the wheel could move these massive figures. Explore the caves of the island adorned with rock carvings, or visit with the fascinating natives to enjoy their superior skills in stone and wood carving. No matter how you choose to explore the island, there is no escaping its unique ability to fascinate and captivate.
