5 Major Attractions in Belize

When you think Central America, you might think of Costa Rica and Panama. What you also need to give importance to is Belize. Located on the eastern coast of Central America, Belize occupies about 9,000 square miles. It’s bordered by Mexico (north), Guatemala (south and west) and the Caribbean Sea (east).

Although English is Belize’s official language – the only country in Central America whose official language is English – Spanish and Belizean Creole are also widely spoken.

With its warm, breezy climate and tranquil beaches, Belize is a haven for swimmers, scuba divers and snorkelers. But that’s not all to Belize. From wildlife enthusiasts to adventure seekers, there’s something for every luxury traveler in Belize.

Here are the top five attractions:

Maya Ruins

Known as the epicenter of the ancient Maya world, Belize has over 11 major Maya temples scattered throughout the country. Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and Caracol are some of the most popular Belize Maya sites. The exploration of these archaeological sites is a treat for history buffs. In fact, a luxury trip to Belize is often incomplete without an expedition to these amazing wonders.

Placencia Beaches

A seacoast village, Placencia boasts some of the most stunning beaches in Belize. It stretches across a 16-mile long peninsula. The eastern side of the peninsula is a long expanse of white sand beach and heavy mangroves in some areas, while the western side is surrounded by a long narrow, north-south trending bay of the Caribbean Sea.

You will also find restaurants and resorts, including deluxe properties, such as Chabil Mar Villas and Turtle Inn, along the palm-fringed shoreline.

The crystal clear water on the eastern side is perfect for snorkeling. During May and June, travelers can witness whale sharks (almost 20 tons) come to the waters to spawn.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve in Ambergris Caye

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is a marine reserve close to Ambergris Caye, off the coast of Belize. The oldest reserve in Belize, Hol Chan Marine Reserve covers almost 4,448 acres of coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangrove forest and Shark Ray Alley. This makes it an immensely popular scuba diving and snorkeling spot.

Caves Branch System (for Cave Tubing)

Cave tubing refers to a small part of the Caves Branch River Cave System. Travelers can go on a cave tubing expedition to over 7 miles underground. Over here, the Caves Branch River Cave System disappears into the underworld, as travelers float on inner tubes.

The Great Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is a vast submarine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It is a circular shaped hole, over 984 feet across and 407 feet deep. Formed during quaternary glaciations when sea levels were much lower, the Great Blue Hole is a former UNESCO World Heritage Site (1996).

This magnificent deep blue hole remains one of the world’s most well-known scuba sites. From exotic marine life to underwater tunnels and rock formations, you will spot extraordinary scenery underneath. At 410 feet below sea level, you will discover the stalactites. Ideally, you should visit The Great Blue Hole during the dry season (April-May).

To sum it up, Belize provides the luxury you deserve for an unforgettable and enjoyable holiday.
