This is a guest post by Ximena Arrieta Who blogs at Alluring Americas’ Peru Operations

Walking the Inca Trail is one of the most magical experiences in Peru. Going through this spectacular cobbled path of more than 500 years with so much history that surrounds it is, without a doubt, a memory that you will keep for the rest of your life. However, to really enjoy it, you have to be prepared.

And with prepared, we don’t refer only to carry the right luggage, the most comfortable boots, and a good attitude. It is also important a previous physical training that allows you to resist the hours of walking – between six and eight daily -, the steps that you will find in the whole route and cope in the best way with the changes of height that you will face on the way.

There are two vital aspects to train endurance and strength. How to achieve it? Here are some recommendations:

1. Get used to the exercise
If you don’t like physical activity but want to do the trek, go slowly. Exercising one hour every two days is taking the first step to a better physical condition and the best way to avoid injuries.

2. Elevate your pulse
Cardiovascular training will allow you to walk without problems long distances because your lungs will have the ability to face both the bustle and the height. Find an activity that you enjoy like swimming, riding a bicycle or running, which will keep your heart rate elevated for a long time.

3. Find your balance
The cobbled path and the rugged trail can be complicated on the route. That is why it is important to work out to maintain balance, and that is achieved by strengthening the middle area of the body. You can combine exercises such as plank or crunches, doing intervals of 20 seconds of work and 10 of rest for 4 or 5 minutes.

4. Do not forget the strength
The muscles of the legs are those that will end up more exhausted after eight hours of walking. It is best to start exercising with a routine of movements focused on those muscles such as air squats, front squats, back squats, and lunges.

5. Take care of your diet
Without a good diet, your effort to get fit for the Inca Trail will have no results. Decrease the amount of sugar, carbs and processed food you eat and give priority to proteins that will help you recover after training and gain muscle mass.

6. Start walking
Once a week, it is ideal to make short treks outside the city. Start with simple routes and go increasing the intensity choosing paths with uneven and rocky terrains. It is ideal that you wear the same boots that you will take to the Inca Trail and that you get used to carrying the weight of the daypack in advance.

Measuring 4,000 miles in length and holding the title of the largest drainage system in the world is the Amazon River. The Amazon basin expands mostly across Brazil and Peru, but also in Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Venezuela. It is home to a large diversity of fauna and flora, not to mention the remaining species that have yet to be identified. A naturalist’s favorite and must-see location is the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, boasting itself as one of Peru’s largest protected areas. The Reserve is home to over one-third of the species found in the entire Amazon rainforest. To truly experience the biodiversity of the region, we recommend voyaging through the Upper Amazon Region of Peru via an Amazon River Cruise. Explore the river in one of these comfortable yet luxurious vessels and get an up-close look at the amazing wildlife and encounter sloths, howler monkeys, pink dolphins, and so much more!

Delfin I – 8-Guest Deluxe Class Vessel

The new and refurbished Delfin I takes you one step beyond luxury, where comfort and grace combine effortlessly with the wilderness of the Amazon to create the most unique and personalize vessel to ever sail in the Peruvian Amazon region. In a setting of understated elegance and world-class hospitality, this classic river vessel features 4 oversized suites, all with private panoramic terraces; 2 offer a private whirlpool for the ultimate treat. Travelers will be spoiled by the floor-to-ceiling windows that allow nature to be part of the natural suite décor. Cabin service 3 times a day will ensure you the most optimal personalized service possible.

Delfin II – 30-Guest Deluxe Class Vessel

Delfin II has 14 large guest suites including 4 Master Suites with 180° panoramic windows, and 10 Suites, 4 of which can be interconnected to accommodate families. Each with movie screen sized windows and natural elements, they offer all the comforts provided by world-class lodging yet with the spirit of casual and refined elegance while you sail in the Peruvian Pacaya Samiria National Reserve with us. The dining room, observation deck and lounge, bar, entertainment center, and library are the ideal gathering places for all our guests. New to the Delfin II are the additions of an exercise space, spa, and lecture/presentation room.

Delfin III – 43-Guest Deluxe Class Vessel

Few things have the power to put us in our place like a total immersion in nature. And few places have the staggering breadth of natural diversity that exists along the Amazon. An expedition into the heart of the Peruvian Amazon jungle aboard the Delfin III is a unique opportunity to explore and gain a deep understanding of one of the most biologically diverse regions on Earth. Showcasing finely appointed interiors with hardwoods sustainably harvested from the rainforest, colorful, handcrafted Peruvian fabrics and local artwork, onboard the Delfin III, the rainforest is never far away yet five-star comforts and conveniences abound. At 170 feet long, the intimate yet spacious river-ship is uniquely capable of providing an unforgettable Amazon River experience. The ship features indoor and outdoor lounge areas, an outdoor plunge pool, an exercise room, a spa offering signature treatments, and a dining room where guests can enjoy hands-on Peruvian cooking demonstrations. Accommodation is in 22 spacious, well-appointed and air-conditioned suites (including 1 single), offering your choice of 4 different styles, each with floor-to-ceiling panoramic picture-windows. You will enjoy daily excursions into the forests and up black water tributaries to hidden lagoons, magical lakes, and native villages, being guided by local, English-speaking naturalists every step of the way who will entertain you with the history of the region, enlighten you with facts about the flora and fauna, and point out wildlife hiding in the jungle canopy, lazing on the riverbanks, or swimming in the water below.

Aria Amazon – 32-Guest Deluxe Class Vessel

Aqua Expeditions highly experienced cruise ship captain and crew and the Aqua Expedition’s rigorous cruise ship standards ensure smooth travel and safety on the waters of the Amazon. Floor to ceiling windows facing the Amazon River (with blackout windows for maximum privacy) in each of the Aria Amazon’s 16 Design Suites, 4 of which can interconnect for families. Handsomely decorated with natural fibers and neutral hues these air-conditioned accommodations with en suite sitting areas and bathrooms each measure 248 square feet.

Amazon Star – 31-Guest Deluxe Class Vessel

The Amazon Star is a shining star in the Peruvian Amazon cruise fleet. On board, the dedicated cruise director will make sure your cruise runs as smoothly as possible, always there to answer any questions and alleviate any concerns you may have. The vessel itself has all the modern facilities you’d expect from a modern boat, including private balconies, en-suite facilities and lecture and fitness rooms. It also features connectable cabins and suites, ideal for families. It also has the Amazon’s largest bar/observation deck at 1000 sq ft, and a state-of-the-art spotting scope ideal for wildlife spotting. Despite the modern facilities, it still retains its expedition charm, having been classically designed and built using locally-sourced, sustainable woods, and furnished to a high standard.

Zafiro – 40-Guest Deluxe Class Vessel

Admire the beauty of the National Reserve and relax in the circular Jacuzzi; let fly your imagination with the sunset over the river and the forest, rest on the private balcony of your suite or on a soft bed listening to the bustle of the jungle; lie down in the massage room or exercise in the gym. This idyllic journey through the wonders of the Amazon rainforest is complemented by the outdoor lounge bar, the indoor reading lounge, the observation deck, a boutique on board and a special elevator for disabled passengers. Passengers on the Zafiro will be amazed and joined in their discovery of landscapes, of local daily life, of smiling and open-hearted people of the Amazon and the great variety of flora and fauna that the Amazon has for us.

Imagine traveling to a place where pastel-colored skies camouflage with the rocky ridges of one of driest deserts on earth! The Atacama Desert, a plateau in South America, expands across 40,541 sq. meters making it an entrancing place perfect for outdoor adventure, stargazing, and culturally enriching experiences. With its charming accents of oases and welcoming towns, this northern Chilean landmark also proves one of the most alluring. We invite you to discover the Atacama Desert and the spectacular accommodations in this region.

Awasi Atacama

Located in the town of San Pero de Atacama is an oasis in the desert known as Awasi Atacama, a pre-Inca inspired lodge with natural elements throughout, is perfectly nestled behind a wall making it almost unseen. During your stay in one of the 10 suites available, guests are provided with a private guide and driver, to ensure that you can make the most of your visit at your own pace. Each Suite is approximately 538 sq. ft. and include a private patio, solarium, plus outdoor and indoor showers. Feeling a bit hungry? Head on over to the Awasi Kitchen where you can savor authentic Chilean dishes using the freshest ingredients. Here you can also take a cooking class with Awasi Atacama’s very own Chef, Juan Pablo Mardones and learn how to make sophisticated delicacies.

explora Atacama

explora Atacama was built in a 17-hectare plot as a base to enjoy the surrounding desert and Andes highlands. It is located near San Pedro de Atacama in the Ayllu de Larache, once known as a community for the Aymara people. The rooms at explora Atacama are bright, airy, and eclectic with desert or mountain views, making it perfect for relaxing after a long day of exploring. To truly experience explora and disconnect from your daily routine, rooms do not have Wi-Fi or television. These amenities are only available in the common areas of the hotel. San Pedro de Atacama prides itself on having the world’s clearest skies, therefore making it the perfect location for stargazing at its observatory. The observatory dome is recognized as one of the best in Chile as it houses an advanced optics telescope among other extraordinary features to provide the best views. There are many more amenities for guests to enjoy such as an indoor & outdoor pool, horseback riding, access to the Puritama Hotsprings Reserve, the Turi Puri Massage Room, and Spa.

Tierra Atacama Boutique Hotel & Spa

On the edge of San Pedro de Atacama, you will come across the Tierra Atacama Boutique Hotel & Spa, created by the Purcell family, also known as longtime owners of Ski Portillo. Tierra Atacama provides the perfect combination of outdoor adventures with the convenience of indoor accommodations and hospitality. This boutique hotel prides itself on environmentally friendly and sustainable design with becoming the first hotel in Chile to produce 100% solar electricity. Tierra Atacama strives to preserve the historic remains by incorporating authentic and natural materials to create a beautiful aesthetic. Each room is elegantly designed with natural textures, which ties in perfectly with the surrounding views of the Atacama desert and Licancabur Volcano. In addition, if you are traveling as a family, this boutique provides a Family Room which comfortably accommodates 6 people and includes a master bedroom with a private bathroom, two rooms with two sets of twin beds and their own bathrooms, and terrace overlooking the hotel gardens.

Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa

Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa is the only lodge in the San Pedro region to be completely surrounded by majestic mountains. Its design was influenced by the architecture of the local community and the terracotta-colored mountain ridge. Thus, creating a seamless and tranquil space where guests can enjoy an “Andesescape”. Alto Atacama offers three different accommodations: Suite Tilo, Standard Catarpe, and Quitor. The Suite Tilo offers ten 770 sq. ft., making it an ideal space for families and offering quiet views of the lagoon and the Catarpe Valley. Meanwhile, there are 27 of the Standard Catarpe rooms measuring 550 sq. ft, offering a private terrace, views of the Cordillera de la Sal Range and the Catarpe Valley. If you prefer to stay close to the common areas, we recommend staying in one of the 5 Quitor rooms, these still provide the same room size as the previous but offer different views of the hotel and its surroundings.

The results of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants (sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna) were announced at an awards ceremony held on Tuesday 24th October in Bogotá, Colombia. Latin American cuisine is a culinary experience that everyone should partake in at least once (or twice) throughout their lifetime. Through its array of flavors, aromas, and creative dishes, each dish is perfectly constructed by world-renowned chefs to ensure every meal and its components are savored to the fullest. Below are some of our favorite and highly recommended restaurants that ranked in Latin America’s 50 best restaurants.
‘Maido’ is the Japanese word for welcome and for the hospitable ambiance exuded by the restaurant. The word is also used to define the gastronomic journey that guests will experience through the Peruvian-Nikkei fusion cuisine. The inspiration for the culinary fusion of Peruvian-Nikkei cuisine comes from chef Mitsuharu Tsumura’s fascination with Japanese cooking after a trip to Osaka, Japan in 2009. Maido’s menu includes dishes such as the 50-hour braised short rib, snail dim sum, and the fish and octopus choripan.

Additionally, there is an abundance of experiences to discover from ice trekking in Los Glaciares National Park to trying Argentine wine and steak prepared by a private chef. It is guaranteed that you will find something that will pique your interests.

To make your trip planning a breeze, we’ve compiled a list of things to do during your stay in Argentina.

Things To Do:

Activity: Dance the Tango at a Milonga
Location: Buenos Aires
Where to Stay: Palacio Duhau – Park Hyatt

Get in close contact with the sensual music and dance of the Tango, Argentina’s major cultural export. For all its diversity, the elusive spirit of Argentina as a country is present everywhere in Buenos Aires. The national dance, the tango, is perhaps the best expression of that spirit—practiced in dance halls, parks, open plazas, and ballrooms. It is a dance of intimate separation and common rhythm, combining both an elegant reserve and an exuberant passion. Put on your dancing shoes and get in on the action at one of Buenos Aires’ many milongas (tango dance clubs), where the true spirit of tango comes alive. Ranging from informal, beginner friendly affairs to sophisticated upmarket venues where experts dominate the floor, there is a milonga in Buenos Aires for everyone.

Activity: Ice Trek on the Perito Moreno Glacier
Location: El Calafate – Los Glaciares National Park
Where to Stay: Eolo Lodge

There is no doubt that the Perito Moreno Glacier is the most beautiful of Los Glaciares National Park. It originates at the Continental Ice Field and descends through colossal mountains, to penetrate into the waters of the Argentino Lake. This unique landscape is framed by the greenest of forests and the most colorful flowers. Ice-Trekking on the Perito Moreno Glacier introduces you to the fascinating landscape of the glaciers: streams, small lagoons, gullies, cravasses and plenty of ice formations of the most incredible blues.

Activity: In-depth Iguassu Waterfalls tour from the Argentina side
Location: Iguassu Falls
Where to Stay: Loi Suites Iguazu

Iguassu Falls are often heralded as the most beautiful falls in the world. The unbelievable and spectacular falls are a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Vastly larger than North America’s Niagara Falls, the Iguassu Falls are made up of 275 separate cataracts that stretch for 2.5 miles, plunging 269 feet into the Iguassu River. A comprehensive tour of Iguassu Falls from the Argentina side will allow you to appreciate the falls’ main attractions such as the Upper and Lower Circuit trails, the Nautical Adventure Boat trip and the Devil’s Throat. However, the true highlight is the Devil’s Throat, a breathtaking, horseshoe-shaped gorge that is 262-feet high and 492 feet wide and falls into the river with a deafening roar. Sun and water vapor often create rainbows over the falls, crowning this beautiful landscape.

Activity: Kayaking tour in Nahuel Huapi National Park
Location: Bariloche (Northern Patagonia – Lake District Region)
Where to Stay: Llao Llao Hotel & Resort

Bariloche is a picturesque town amidst grandiose snow-capped mountains, crystal clear waters and dense forest of cypress and coihue trees. A kayaking tour on Lake Moreno or Lake Gutiérrez in Nahuel Huapi National Park takes you through part of the “Small Circuit,” a track of mountains and lakes which surround Bariloche city with wonderful sceneries. Follow your guide around the lake as he or she shares their expertise on the native coihue trees and the mountain scenery, including Mt Lopez, Catedral, and Mt Capilla.

Activity: Take a Cooking Class in The Wine Capital of Argentina
Location: Mendoza
Where to Stay: Cavas Wine Lodge

Mendoza is nestled within the majestic eastern foothills of the Andean mountain ranges. The dry and sunny Mendoza region is ideal for cultivating grapes used to make some of the finest wines in the world. The city of Mendoza is known as the Wine Capital of Argentina. A cooking class here allows you to eat like a local and get an accurate look at a culture. What is perhaps even more rewarding than eating like a local is understanding the ingredients and care that goes into the preparation of the traditional cuisine. Come and learn how to prepare a typical Argentine meal. Mendoza is the culinary heartland of Argentina, where splendid wines are blended and the country’s top chefs create magnificent cuisine.

Activity: Wildlife Watching at Peninsula Valdes
Location: Atlantic Patagonia – Peninsula Valdes
Where to Stay: Estancia Rincón Chico

Peninsula Valdes is Argentina’s natural world heritage site, offering the possibility to sightsee all sorts of Patagonian species such as whales, sea lions, and penguins. Pay a visit to Puerto Pirámide, a small traditional village on the south Atlantic shores of the Peninsula Valdes and an important tourist location to spot southern right whales, which visit the area from May to December. Take in the outstanding beauty of Punta Norte, with its wide range of both marine and land life, sea lions, elephant seals, and orcas. You will also see elephant seals and possibly orcas (between September and April) at Punta Delgada.

Your Central America Adventure Starts Here!

From exploring quaint villages surrounding magnificent Lake Atitlán to a mystical overnight among jungle-shrouded Mayan Ruins, inspiring adventures await you throughout Central America.

Each Alluring Americas Experience features a unique touch, making your travels especially enjoyable and truly unforgettable. Crafted from over 15 years of leadership and innovation in Central America tourism, Alluring Americas Experiences set a new standard for travel.

Antigua Streets and Eats Tour

This feast for the senses combines the robust flavors of Antigua’s street food with this colonial city’s colorful traditions, culture, and history.
Shoes and appetite ready, you will begin the walking tour along charming cobblestone streets lined with brightly painted Spanish colonial architecture, stopping to learn about the history of some of Antigua’s most picturesque sights. Then it’s on to some of the comedores (eateries) most loved by locals.

If you like you may sample delicious, authentic Guatemalan cuisine such as chuchitos (Guatemala-style tamales), pupusas (cheese-filled corn tortillas), rellenitos (plantain dough filled with beans and then fried), and even pigs’ feet (if you dare!).

You will learn about the cultural background of these everyday delicacies as your guide leads you through Antigua’s bustling community market to see, smell, touch, and taste the fresh ingredients used in their preparation. One of the best in Guatemala, the thriving market showcases rows of tasty and exotic fruits, vegetables, seeds, beans, grains, spices, meats, and fish. (Please note: This tour is for more adventurous eaters!)

This enjoyable outing provides a wonderful taste of authentic Antigua cuisine whilst you learn about the city’s fascinating colonial history.

Yaxhá and Topoxte Sunset Tour

One of the largest Mayan complexes in Guatemala, Yaxhá contains more than 500 structures, including nine temples and one of the few twin pyramid complexes outside of Tikal.

Your adventure features a climb up Temple 216 (37 meters / 121 feet), providing a 360-degree panorama of the rainforest canopy, nearby pyramids, and two shimmering lakes. You will also explore the less visited area of the site before hopping aboard a boat to visit the small island ruins at Topoxte.

As the sun sets behind this post-classic site, the densely shrouded temples and structures lure your imagination back into a bygone era. Enjoy onboard drinks and savor the setting as you cruise Lake Yaxhá upon returning.

This tour spotlights Yaxhá’s spectacular temples with the added mystique of a sunset boat tour of unique island ruins.

Uaxactún & Tikal Adventure with Picnic Lunch (1N/2D)

One of the longest-occupied Mayan cities, Uaxactún amazes by day with its incredible ruins and enchants by night with its nocturnal creatures. After your morning arrival in Flores, a day of exploring lies ahead among the temples.

You’ll visit a cluster of celestially oriented ruins that, to this day, accurately pinpoint the sun when the seasons change. In the village, you’ll learn about the natural gum, allspice, and xate (exported globally for floral arrangements) that locals collect. At dusk, you’ll climb a lookout tower for sunset drinks, followed by nighttime jungle exploration.

Keep an eye out for watchful owls, spooky insects such as tarantulas, and the coatimundi (long-tailed cousin of the raccoon). Afterward, enjoy a delicious, locally made dinner before camping overnight amid the ruins.

The next day starts with breakfast and a last look around Uaxactún. A 45-minute ride through the deep jungle will take you to Tikal National Park, where some 3,000 ancient structures rise from the rainforest floor. You will enter Tikal through the forest, an area most visitors never get to see.

Not only will you enjoy a fascinating tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, but you’ll also experience the sights and sounds of tropical birds and animals, including howler and spider monkeys. Following in the footsteps of Maya royalty and commoners, you will visit the majestic Great Plaza and its Temple of the Jaguar (44 meters / 144 feet), Temple of the Masks (38m / 125ft), the Acropolis, and much more. You will enjoy a picnic lunch and will have time afterwards, if you wish, to continue exploring this intriguing site before departing for your next destination.

The Uaxactún camping getaway uniquely combines jungle, cultural, and archaeological encounters.

Uaxactún & Tikal Adventure with Picnic Lunch (2N/3D)

It’s one thing to visit Guatemala’s stunning ruins, but wait until you spend the night at one — in particular, Uaxactún, one the longest-occupied Mayan cities. After your nighttime arrival at Uaxactún from Flores, you’ll drop your belongings in your tent at the campsite near the jungle-shrouded temples. But don’t even think about settling into your bed yet! First, you’ll set out along jungle trails in search of nocturnal wildlife, such as owls, opossums, and spooky-looking insects.

Uaxactún’s many structures include an elaborate, thoroughly accurate astronomical cluster, where you’ll gaze up at a twinkling blanket of stars and luxuriate in the jungle mystique.

In the morning, you’ll embark on a guided tour of the Uaxactún ruins, stopping at partially restored temples that align perfectly with the sun on key dates of the calendar. In the village, you’ll learn about the natural gum, allspice, and xate (exported globally for floral arrangements) that locals collect. For lunch, you’ll savor a traditional dish prepared with locally sourced ingredients. You can rest or explore at your leisure in the afternoon. At dusk, you’ll climb a lookout tower for sunset drinks, followed by a delicious, locally made dinner before another overnight in the jungle camp.

The next day starts with breakfast and a last look around this fascinating place.

You will enjoy a picnic lunch and will have time afterward, if you wish, to continue exploring this intriguing site before departing for your next destination.

The Uaxactún camping getaway uniquely combines jungle, cultural, and archaeological encounters.

Las Cuevas Nature Expedition and Caracol Ruins

Day 1 – This overnight jungle adventure takes you to Las Cuevas Research Station, a nature reserve dedicated to environmental research and conservation located in the heart of the Chiquibul Forest

Reserve, deep in the Maya Mountains. Enjoy breathtaking views as you traverse the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest and stop for a refreshing dip on one of the crystal clear pools. Once at the reserve, you can relax, explore the nearby dry cave, or head out on a 2km/1.24 mile “Nature Walk and Sunset Tour” where you may see jungle wildlife and an abundance of birds. The trail leads to a bird tower with a 30-minute ascent to a lookout above the canopy with vast sunset views that extend as far as Guatemala. Enjoy an outdoor dinner serenaded by evening birdsong in a spot where scarlet macaws often fly over and perch in nearby trees. Then it’s time for the evening “Creatures of the Night Hike,” where you may see lizards, frogs, beetles, owls, snakes, and armadillos. Very rarely, a tapir or elusive black or speckled jaguar may even be spotted. After the day’s adventures, it’s time for a well-deserved rest in the research station’s rustic-but-comfortable private cabins, each with four beds.

Day 2 – An early morning breakfast on a tower overlooking the jungle canopy starts the day, with views of tropical birds in search of their morning meal. Then you will depart for the ancient Mayan ruins of Caracol (1200 BCE to 900 AD) to arrive in the temperate morning hours and before the crowds turn up. Climb the pyramids and view the stone carvings at this spectacular site, which covered more than 200 SQ. km/124 SQ. miles – larger than the modern-day Belize City – and is believed to have had nearly double Belize City’s current population. Afterward, enjoy a picnic lunch and swim beside the beautiful, cascading waterfalls of Río On natural pools, then return to the lowlands in time to make connecting flights or relax at your hotel.

Enjoy a true jungle experience and support the research and conservation projects in one of the largest remaining blocks of tropical forest in Central America.

Explore Mystical, Majestic Lake Atitlán

Experience the splendor of majestic Lake Atitlán by kayaking across its sparkling surface. Your adventure guide will meet you at your hotel for a short ride to the dock and a one- to two-hour (depending on your wishes) kayaking journey.

As you kayak you may encounter local fishermen who are usually happy to share a glimpse of their daily life. After landing at the intriguing Cerro de Oro (Hill of Gold), a 1.5 hours hike will take you through the village with the same name, known for its creativity in turning plastic waste into recycled art. The trek culminates at the summit (1,636 meters / 5,368 feet), where you’ll be rewarded with impressive views of the lake and its volcanic backdrop.

Once back at the dock, hitch a ride in the back of a pickup and rumble off to Santiago for lunch and a visit with Guatemala’s favorite indigenous saint, Maximón. Afterward, hop aboard a boat and cruise to San Juan, where you’ll visit weaving co-ops, medicinal herb gardens, and art naïf painters.

Go on foot or squeeze into a tuc-tuc and ride like the locals. You will be back at your hotel just in time for a sunset drink or a relaxing dip in the pool.

This lively tour combines kayaking, hiking, and boating to reveal majestic and mystical destinations within the Lake Atitlán basin.

Guided Tour and Dinner with Renowned Copán Archaeologist

Located in western Honduras, Copán ranks as one of the finest archaeological sites in the Mayan world. What better way to see it than with the expert who spent years unearthing its secrets? Your Copán immersion experience will be led by David Sedat, renowned archaeologist and the former Copán field director for the University of Pennsylvania’s archaeology museum.

In the morning, David escorts you from your hotel to the ruins for a private tour of this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its intricately carved stelae and incredible hieroglyphic stairway exemplify why Copán is considered one of the most lavish cultural centers of the Mayan world. Your itinerary includes stops at the sculpture museum and two ancient tunnels that provide insight into Copán’s early stages.

In the evening, join David at his home for cocktails, appetizers and a one-hour presentation on Copán’s fascinating royal tombs, which he helped excavate. He also covers some of the site’s amazing, lesser-known discoveries. During the dinner that follows, David will gladly answer your questions. Half the cost of the presentation goes directly to David’s and the University of Pennsylvania’s ongoing work at Copán.

This experience offers a private and intimate look at one of the most fascinating Mayan archaeological sites in the region.

Pacaya Volcano Hike with Luxury Picnic

A grumbling, smoke-belching spectacle, Pacaya Volcano (2,552 meters / 8,371 feet) beckons adventure-seekers with its breathtaking display of nature’s raw power.

Your morning transfer delivers you to Pacaya’s foothills for a steep hike through a lush pine forest. A widening panorama unfolds on the way up, offering views of northern volcanoes, the Pacific lowlands and all the way to El Salvador.

At the base of the peak itself, a barren moonscape of loose rock and pebbles greets you, adding tricky footing to the adventure. Steam rises from numerous vents, which sometimes yield a view of bright orange magma deep inside. After selfies near the crater, you’ll feast on a sumptuous picnic lunch and savor final views of the summit. This full-day expedition wraps up with a brisk walk down to the park base for your return ride to Antigua.

This Experience rewards enthusiastic climbers with spectacular panoramic views and a delicious gourmet picnic lunch.

A Galápagos Islands visit is an unparalleled personal experience with the natural world. This world-famous archipelago boast the highest rate of endemic species in the world and is inhabited by a mind-blowing multitude of flora and wildlife. Though often explored by an expeditionary Galápagos cruise or private charter which offers a big-picture panorama of the archipelago and access to remote visitor sites on uninhabited islands that are only reachable by a vessel, a cruise-based way of exploring the islands may not be ideal for some travelers. Those who are sensitive to motion sickness or sensations like “sea legs”, or those whose cruise fixed departure dates may not fit within their vacation window, may find a hotel-based experience an ideal alternative. Hotel-based experiences allow you to spend more time on an island enjoying on-island inland activities such as kayaking, biking, hiking a volcano rim, or just relaxing and taking a leisurely walk. Since you’ll be staying on inhabited islands, you’ll also get a better idea of the human side of the Galapagos and what life is like for the people who live there.

Here are our top 4 picks for the best hotel-based experience during your visit to the Galapagos Islands. All hotels are located on Santa Cruz Island.

Pikaia Lodge

Hidden in a secluded location and nestled on top of an extinct volcano crater, Pikaia Lodge is a stunning alternative for exploring the “last paradise on Earth” in a truly sustainable, yet luxurious land based way. The Pikaia Lodge concept is designed for the environmentally conscious, eco-adventure traveler, who seeks intimate contact with the unique natural heritage of the Galapagos along with all the comforts of a highly evolved lifestyle. No lack of privacy, rigid timetables, seasickness nor confined spaces of the typical yachts or cruises. As a Pikaia Lodge guest, you will enjoy active, quality guided land and marine day programs in small groups. At night you’ll rest in spacious and quiet accommodations. Due to its central location in the Archipelago, the Santa Cruz Island provides you with the perfect opportunity to develop unique land based day tour concept, since the most interesting islands, secluded white sandy beaches and wildlife sites of the Galapagos National Park are nearby. All these can be reached within relatively short navigation times on board the lodge’s large, comfortable, safe and stable ocean going yacht Pikaia I. In fact, you will discover some of the finest beaches of the Galapagos near the lodge. Just by taking a stroll, you can come face to face with a wild giant tortoise. Pikaia Lodge has its own private Tortoise Reserve on the property. Designed and crafted to complement the natural environment, this is as close to nature as you can get!
Galapagos Safari Camp

Galapagos Safari Camp provides guests a unique experience with its traditional African-styled tented camp, a creative alternative to exploring the archipelago and soak nature in all comfort. Nestled in the wild highlands of Santa Cruz Island with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the National Park, the stylish camp offers a panoramic lodge, nine charming tents, a family suite and an infinity pool under a canapé of endemic trees. The luxurious tents are raised on wooden platforms and supported by three layers: one to protect against the sun, another against the rain and an inner canvas shell. The Galapagos Safari Camp is located within a 55-hectare farm, rich in birdlife including finches, warblers, mockingbirds, Galapagos doves, egrets and owls. You will also be surprised by giant tortoises roaming next your tent! The Galapagos Safari Camp is an ideal family vacation getaway. During the summer and winter school vacations, the camp’s Kids Club offers a qualified coordinator to supervise screen printing, shoe painting, cooking classes, storytelling, crafts and more! Packages range from 3-7 nights and offer a combination of land activities with boat excursions to neighboring islands.
