Walk through the central market, rich in handicrafts, weavings, and other local goods. Here you will get a peek into the daily lives of the people of La Paz to give you an understanding of the local culture.

Next, head to Cerro Cumbre, a mountain clearing of Bolivia that locals believe to be holy, where you will find the Witches’ Market. Also known as La Hechiceria and El Mercado de Las Brujas, the market is a popular tourist attraction in La Paz.

Dozens of vendors line the streets, selling a variety of obscure and very strange products, ingredients and whatever else may be necessary to carry out traditional spiritual rituals from the Aymara world. The Aymara are indigenous people that live in the Altiplano and Andes regions, with nearly two million living in Chile, Peru, and Bolivia. Visit the viewpoint “Mirador de Killi Killi” and the outdoor replica of Tiwanaku temple.

Then descend to the more modern southern part of La Paz to visit the Valley of the Moon, where a clay mountain has been impressively shaped by erosion. Ride by cable car, or “Teleférico,” which provides access to some of the most captivating views over the city and will give you an entirely different perspective.
