Head out to explore La Paz. The city is situated in a valley at the foothills of the Andes range at an elevation of 11,942 feet above sea level. Walk through the central market, rich in handicrafts, weavings, and other local goods. Here you will get a peek into the daily lives of the people of La Paz to give you an understanding of the local culture.

Next, head to Cerro Cumbre, a mountain clearing of Bolivia that locals believe to be holy, where you will find the Witches’ Market. Also known as La Hechiceria and El Mercado de Las Brujas, the market is a popular tourist attraction in La Paz. Dozens of vendors line the streets, selling a variety of obscure and very strange products, ingredients and whatever else may be necessary to carry out traditional spiritual rituals from the Aymara world. The Aymara are indigenous people that live in the Altiplano and Andes regions, with a population of nearly two million in Chile, Peru, and Bolivia. Visit the viewpoint “Mirador de Killi Killi”; and the outdoor replica of Tiwanaku temple.

Then descend to the more modern southern part of La Paz to reach and visit the Valley of the Moon, where a clay mountain has been impressively shaped by erosion. Ride by cable car – known locally as the  “Teleférico” – that provides access to some of the most captivating views over the city and will give you an entirely different perspective.

Many of the building foundations in old town Ollantaytambo were built by the Inca, and most of the Inca canchas, or blocks, are still intact. The Fortress was first a place of worship, as well as a location for studying astronomy. It was here that Manco Inca defeated the Spanish in 1538 before fleeing to the mountains of Vilcabamba.

The 16 massive terraces spread before you are a testimony to the magnificent Inca masonry. Climb the steep stone steps up to the imposing fortress at the top of the mountain – around 260 steps! From there, the view down the valley is superb and you can admire the huge monoliths that form the Temple of the Sun.
