Visit the Arenal Volcano National Park

Walk a trail of sloths, hike the Arenal Volcano National Park and soak in natural hot springs.

You could say that the sloths are one of our emblematic animals of the fauna of Costa Rica . These small and gracious friends are particularly beautiful, owners of a tenderness with an eternal smile that makes it seem that he is always happy. Enjoy a short hike through the secondary forest on a special pathway where it is very common to spot these little green mammals, even if they try to blend in with the flora. Our expert guides know their secrets, so they do not hide for a long time. In addition, you will enjoy many fabulous plants that will teach you curious facts about the region. Because of its location and type of flora, this trail is very diverse in birds, to complement a morning full of wildlife.

Continue to one of the most active volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere, Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s crowning natural attractions. Follow your naturalist guide along a gorgeous network of trails that wind around the base of the volcano while learning about the area’s fascinating geologic history. Take in spectacular views of the crater, which rises 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) above sea level and regularly emits puffs of smoke and streams of glowing lava. The moderately challenging hike leads you through thick patches of rainforest and across hardened lava fields from the volcano’s previous eruptions.
End the day with a relaxing soak in the Eco Termales Hot Springs. These thermal pools are the life work of the Hidalgo family and offer a more private visit than some of the other springs in the area.

Day 5: ARENAL

Rappel waterfalls into a canyon and take a wild ride down the river!

Combining two of the country’s most adrenaline-packed activities, this tour will have you rappelling down waterfalls and surging over white-water rapids! Begin with 4×4 ride into the lush tropical rainforest surrounding the Arenal Volcano. A short jaunt along a forested trail leads to the first waterfall, where you’ll rappel down the waterfall into the gorgeous canyon below. In total, you will descend five rappels. Four are alongside or directly in the waterfall, and one is along a dry rock face.

After completing this invigorating adventure, you will trek out of the canyon and hop back into the 4x4s, which will take you to the Balsa River which offers class II/III rapids. Launch off into the water and embark upon a wet and wild ride down the river. After surging through the rapids known as “Magnetic Rock” and “Dredges,” you will reach the San Carlos Bridge, which marks the end of the journey. Here, you can swim, sip cold drinks, and snack on tropical fruit. A hearty Costa Rican lunch will follow.
