Day 2: ANTIGUA

Experience Antigua’s countryside on a mountain bike adventure.

Venture out to experience Antigua’s countryside on a mountain bike adventure.

Learn about the dramatic history of sites like Ciudad Vieja once capital of Guatemala before it was hit by a mudslide from the crater of a nearby volcano in 1541. Visit picturesque ruins and a macadamia farm. Ride to Santiago Zamora and San Antonio Aguas Calientes, two towns known for their colorful textile production. You will gain insight on the local during this family riding adventure. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the countryside.

Day 3: ANTIGUA

Enjoy an exhilarating trek and 4x4 vehicle exploration to Acetano Volcano.

Take a 4×4 off road ride to the trailhead where your vehicle will begin the ascension up the volcano dropping you off at the 500-meter mark, where you will begin your hike uphill to reach the summit. Take in the panoramic views of the region as you continue hiking up to the summit. Once you reach the top, spectacular views await, along with refreshments and a picnic lunch that will help you replenish your energy before hiking back down to meet vehicle.

Day 4: ANTIGUA / LAKE ATITLAN

Travel to the Lakeshore of Lake Atitla

Travel to the Lakeshore of Lake Atitlan on a biking expedition. En-route visit the town of Comalapa and the Mayan ruins of Ixmiche.

Discover the town of Comalapa and its wonderful authentic market. See the local people going about their daily lives buying produce and goods, dressed in the traditional textiles of the area.

Head to the Mayan ruins of Iximiche to begin your biking expedition. After a short tour of the ruins, you hop on the bikes and head out on a ride through Guatemala’s backcountry. A nice gradual dirt road climb out of Tecpan quickly turns to trail and winds its way through the pine clad mountains. There are various technical trail drops as well as a couple tough steep climbs. The ride takes you through a Mayan settlement before dropping the famous “sendero de las vacas” or the trail of the cows (a steep chute-like descent). There is a 4 km climb up to the viewpoint above Lake Atitlan where we have lunch and take in the views. After lunch you hit the famous Santa Catarina trail and head to the camp.

Day 5: LAKE ATITLAN

Enjoy a kayak exploration on Lake Atitlan

Enjoy a kayak exploration on Lake Atitlan visiting the villages of San Juan and Santiago.

Paddle out on the lake to discover two of the most fascinating villages that overlook majestic Lake Atitlán, San Juan La Laguna and Santiago. In San Juan, you can experience indigenous weaving demonstrations and learn about traditional techniques being used to create their beautiful textiles. Visit the workshop of art naïf painters to see and learn about their craft.

Head back on the lake and enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding area as you travel to Santiago. Visit the house of Maximón, the Maya folk saint who moves annually with the selection of his new caretaker. A shaman may be performing a ritual for a local follower or two gathered at Maximón’s candle-lit altar.
Take a stroll through the village streets and learn about its vivid history and explore the local market to see some of the distinctive textiles and primitive art that are both famous from the lake basin.

Days 6-7: LAKE ATITLAN / PETEN

Start your Guatemalan Jungle experience

Fly to Flores/Peten in the Guatemalan Jungle to start your 2 nights Uaxactun jungle camping experience.

Immerse yourself in the Mayan history during your exploration program. Gain insight on the Maya culture as you explore the sites of Uaxactun and Tikal.

Uaxactún ruins, visit the partially restored temples that align perfectly with the sun on key dates of the calendar. In the village, you will learn about the natural gum, allspice, and xate (exported globally for floral arrangements) that locals collect. Climb a lookout tower for sunset drinks and spectacular views of this ancient Mayan city.

Tikal National Park, where some 3,000 ancient structures rise from the rainforest floor. You will enter Tikal through the forest, an area most visitors never get to see. Not only will you enjoy a fascinating tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, but you’ll also experience the sights and sounds of tropical birds and animals, including howler and spider monkeys. Following in the footsteps of Maya royalty and commoners, you will visit the majestic Great Plaza and its Temple of the Jaguar (44 metres / 144 feet), Temple of the Masks (38m / 125ft), the Acropolis, and much more.
