Day 1: ARRIVE GUATEMALA CITY

Welcome to Guatemala!

Travel to the charming colonial town of Antigua and begin your Guatemala family adventure.

Day 2: ANTIGUA

Join local artisans at their workshops

Head out to learn the craft of wooden face painting and sample delicious chocolates during a cacao workshop.

Join local artisans at their workshop to begin your face painting experience. For centuries, the indigenous population has carved extraordinary masks that show us the various and colorful expressions of the Guatemalan culture. These masks play an essential role in local rituals, dances, dramas, and religious ceremonies. You will learn the history behind the masks while painting during this interactive workshop.

Head to a local chocolatier to learn about the process of cacao. You will make chocolate right from the cacao bean and learn to prepare chocolate drinks like the Mayans and conquistadores used to. You will also sample different variations of this sweet treat.

Day 3: ANTIGUA

Venture out to experience Antigua’s countryside on a scenic biking exploration

Learn about the dramatic history of sites like Ciudad Vieja once capital of Guatemala before it was hit by a mudslide from the crater of a nearby volcano in 1541. Visit picturesque ruins and a macadamia farm. Ride to Santiago Zamora and San Antonio Aguas Calientes, two towns known for their colorful textile production. You will gain insight on the local during this family riding adventure. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the countryside.

Day 4: ANTIGUA / LAKE ATITLAN

Travel to the Lakeshore of Lake Atitlan

Travel to the Lakeshore of Lake Atitlan. En-route visit the town of Comalapa and the ruins of Ixmiche.

Discover the town of Comalapa and see the famous murals painted by the town’s children, commemorating major events in Guatemala’s history. Visit local painters who continue the tradition of naïf paintings that the town is so famous for.

Head to the wonderful authentic market of Comalapa to see the local people go about their daily life buying produce and goods for the rest of the week, still dressed in the traditional textiles of the area. Enjoy lunch and then explore the Mayan ruins of Iximiche.

Day 5: LAKE ATITLAN

Enjoy a kayak exploration on Lake Atitlan

Enjoy a kayak exploration on Lake Atitlan visiting the villages of San Juan and Santiago.

Paddle out on the lake to discover two of the most fascinating villages that overlook majestic Lake Atitlán, San Juan La Laguna and Santiago.

In San Juan, you can experience indigenous weaving demonstrations and learn about traditional techniques being used to create their beautiful textiles. Visit the workshop of art naïf painters to see and learn about their craft.

Head back on the lake and enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding area as you travel to Santiago. Visit the house of Maximón, the Mayan folk saint who moves annually with the selection of his new caretaker. A shaman may be performing a ritual for a local follower or two gathered at Maximón’s candle-lit altar. Take a stroll through the village streets and learn about their vivid history and explore the local market to see some of the distinctive textiles and primitive art that are both famous products of the lake basin.

Day 6: LAKE ATITLAN

Immerse yourself in the local culture during a family friendly cooking class

Join a local chef for a visit to the local market to buy ingredients and to meet local vendors. Learn about the different variety of produce that are native to this region. Head to the chef’s kitchen where you will learn how to prepare local favorites. There is an incredible list of recipes that you can choose from, including vegetarian dishes. Spend the next couple of hours learning how to prepare three authentic Guatemalan dishes, and after enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Day 7: LAKE ATITLAN / GUATEMALA CITY

Day at leisure

Spend an entire day at leisure relaxing or exploring the lake on your own before heading back to the city.

There are a variety of water and nature activities that you can enjoy, including kayaking, canoeing, paragliding, mountain biking, horseback riding, zip-lining, nature hikes, and visits to the Laguna Nature Reserve.

Travel back to Guatemala City.
