Day 1: ARRIVE GUATEMALA CITY

Welcome to Guatemala!

Travel to the charming colonial town of Antigua and begin your Guatemala family adventure.

Day 2: ANTIGUA

Experience Antigua’s countryside on a scenic biking exploration

Learn about the dramatic history of sites like Ciudad Vieja, once capital of Guatemala before it was hit by a mudslide from the crater of a nearby volcano in 1541. Visit picturesque ruins and a macadamia farm. Ride to Santiago Zamora and San Antonio Aguas Calientes, two towns known for their colorful textile production. You will gain insight on the local culture during this family riding adventure. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the countryside.

Day 3: ANTIGUA

Full day trek

Head out to discover the fiery crater of Pacaya Volcano during a full day trek.

A grumbling, smoke-belching spectacle, Pacaya Volcano (2,552 metres / 8,371 feet) beckons adventure-seekers with its breathtaking display of nature’s raw power.

Travel by vehicle to Pacaya’s foothills and begin a steep hike through a lush pine forest. A widening panorama unfolds on the way up, offering views of northern volcanoes, the Pacific lowlands and all the way to El Salvador. At the base of the peak itself, a barren moonscape of loose rock and pebbles greets you, adding tricky footing to the adventure. Steam rises from numerous vents, which sometimes yield a view of bright orange magma deep inside.

Take a minute to admire this majestic volcano and enjoy beautiful panoramic views before heading back down to enjoy a delicious gourmet picnic lunch.

Day 4: ANTIGUA

Travel to the Lakeshore of Lake Atitlan

Travel to the Lakeshore of Lake Atitlan. En-route visit the town of Comalapa and the ruins of Ixmiche.

Discover the town of Comalapa and see the famous murals painted by the town’s children, commemorating major events in Guatemala’s history. Visit local painters who continue the tradition of naïf paintings that the town is so famous for. Head to the wonderful authentic market of Comalapa to see the local people go about their daily life buying produce and goods for the rest of the week, still dressed in the traditional textiles of the area. Enjoy lunch and then explore the Mayan ruins of Iximiche.

Day 5: LAKE ATITLAN

Enjoy a kayak exploration on Lake Atitlan

Enjoy a kayak exploration on Lake Atitlan visiting the villages of San Juan and Santiago.

Paddle out on the lake to discover two of the most fascinating villages that overlook majestic Lake Atitlán, San Juan La Laguna and Santiago.

In San Juan, you can experience indigenous weaving demonstrations and learn about traditional techniques being used to create their beautiful textiles. Visit the workshop of art naïf painters to see and learn about their craft.

Head back on the lake and enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding area as you travel to Santiago. Visit the house of Maximón, the Mayan folk saint who moves annually with the selection of his new caretaker. A shaman may be performing a ritual for a local follower or two gathered at Maximón’s candle-lit altar.

Take a stroll through the village streets and learn about their vivid history and explore the local market to see some of the distinctive textiles and primitive art that are both famous and originate from the lake basin.

Day 6: LAKE ATITLAN

Day at leisure

Spend an entire day at leisure relaxing or exploring the lake on your own.

There are a variety of water and nature activities that you can enjoy, including kayaking, canoeing, paragliding, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, zip-lining, scuba diving, visits to Laguna Lodge Nature Reserve, and nature hikes around the surrounding area.

Day 7: LAKE ATITLAN / PETEN

Day 8: PETEN

Explore the magnificent Mayan city of Tikal

Tikal National Park, is where some 3,000 ancient structures rise from the rainforest floor. Enjoy a fascinating tour of the impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience the sights and sounds of tropical birds and animals, including howler and spider monkeys, that live in the jungle canopy.

Once home to an estimated 50,000 residents or more, Tikal flourished from 800 BC to 900 AD. Follow in the footsteps of Mayan royalty and commoners as you admire the majestic Great Plaza and its Temple of the Jaguar (44 meters / 144 feet), and Temple of the Masks (38m / 125ft.

Day 9: PETEN / GUATEMALA CITY

Explore Ixpanpajul Nature Park

Enjoy the day exploring Ixpanpajul Nature Park, Guatemala’s subtropical rainforest.

Ixpanpajul Nature Park offers several lush and well-maintained ways into the jungle, perfect for a family outing. The beautiful park preserves 450 hectares (1.7 square miles) of almost untouched rainforest, into which we have packed all sorts of activities.

The most popular trek is a self-guided hike (a little over an hour) that takes you to several spectacular viewpoints. There are also suspended bridges through the forest canopy. Horseback rides, hiking safaris, birding treks, and ATV rentals are also available. You will find more than 200 species of trees, 150 birds, and 40 mammals, including three types of monkey, all whom call the park home. Enjoy lunch during your tour.
