Fly to Flores/Peten to begin your immersive exploration of the Guatemalan jungle, during your Ultimate Trek & camp adventure.
Drive through Tikal National Park to the remote Maya village of Uaxactun. Enjoy a delicious local lunch in an inspiring outdoor setting, amongst the temples and pyramid structures. Head out on a 4×4 deep into the Maya biosphere reserve, where only the most intrepid explorers have passed. Feel the greatness of the jungle with its huge canopy, while cruising through the “bajos and montanas” We set off on foot for the last hour of the journey, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the rainforest. Arrive at camp and refresh with a welcome drink.
Wake up to the sounds of birds and enjoy the uniqueness of the jungle surroundings whilst spotting birds and other wildlife.
Start a trek following an ancient Mayan trail. A small lagoon inhabited by Morelet’s, crocodiles marks the half-way point and is not far from where the climb to the Mirador plateau begins. The elevation gain allows glimpses of views over the extensive vegetation and expansive forest. Reach the second camp at the Nakbe ruins in time for a sunset atop the temples, overlooking the vast site and rainforest. Settle into camp and refresh; wine and dine with the stars.
Travel to the Lakeshore of Lake Atitlan on a biking expedition. En-route visit the town of Comalapa and the Mayan ruins of Ixmiche.
Discover the town of Comalapa and its wonderful authentic market. See the local people going about their daily lives buying produce and goods, dressed in the traditional textiles of the area.
Head to the Mayan ruins of Iximiche to begin your biking expedition. After a short tour of the ruins, you hop on the bikes and head out on a ride through Guatemala’s backcountry. A nice gradual dirt road climb out of Tecpan quickly turns to trail and winds its way through the pine clad mountains. There are various technical trail drops as well as a couple tough steep climbs. The ride takes you through a Mayan settlement before dropping the famous “sendero de las vacas” or the trail of the cows (a steep chute-like descent). There is a 4 km climb up to the viewpoint above Lake Atitlan where we have lunch and take in the views. After lunch you hit the famous Santa Catarina trail and head to the camp.
Get ready to be catered to after a long day of adventure. The boutique camping arrangement pampers you with the furnishings, amenities, and services of a full-service hotel, including a host who greets you with a cold drink and refreshing towel after your long days of exploration.
Venture out to explore the El Mirador complex and all its temples.
Experience more of El Mirador’s wonders, perhaps a climb up El Tigre temple 55m/180ft for an amazing panorama. You can also explore behind the scenes to experience some of the site’s hidden gems.
After two full days of exploring El Mirador, head out on a trek to El Tintal.
Trekking along the official route with well-marked posts, complete with the distances (kms) painted onto trees and rocks, you will hike deep into the forest until arriving at El Tintal ruins.
Once more, climb to the top of the temple for amazing views of the neighboring sites and vast stretches of virgin rainforest. Your chef again prepares surprising dishes accompanied with wine. Dine under a starry sky, a delightful way to celebrate your final night in this amazing setting.
Weather permitting, today is just an easy two-hour hike to the secluded community of Carmelita. Learn about conservation and tourism through the eyes of the locals. After lunch, your support vehicle provides a leisurely ride to your lodge.
Tikal National Park, where some 3,000 ancient structures rise from the rainforest floor. Enjoy a fascinating tour of the impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience the sights and sounds of tropical birds and animals, including howler and spider monkeys, that live in the jungle canopy. Once home to an estimated 50,000 residents or more, Tikal flourished from 800 BC to 900 AD. Follow in the footsteps of Maya royalty and commoners as you admire the majestic Great Plaza and its Temple of the Jaguar (44 meters / 144 feet), and Temple of the Masks (38m / 125ft.
Take in some last-minute shopping or perhaps a delicious dinner on your own before your journey comes to an end.
