Day 4: SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS

Last day of Salkantay Trail trek

Learn about time honored traditions during your visit to the Andean village of Chinchero, enjoy a weaving workshop, and explore Maras and Moray

Chinchero is a traditional Andean Indian village located high up on the windswept plains of Anta at about 12,500 feet above sea level. Its colorful Sunday market is one of the most authentic in Peru. In the main plaza, an adobe colonial church, dating from the early seventeenth century, has been built upon the foundations of an Incan temple or palace. The ceiling and walls are covered in beautiful floral and religious designs.

Chinchero’s inhabitants continue to honor their Inca ancestors by passing their weaving skills from generation to generation. Visit a local textile center, where traditional weaving techniques have remained virtually unchanged for centuries.

Venture to the fascinating and beautiful sites of Maras and Moray. The circular terraces of Moray are referred to as a greenhouse of the Incas by the local people, and historians believe the site was used as an agricultural research center. In Maras, explore the town and learn how to prepare the traditional fermented drink called chicha.

Enjoy the view at the salt fields of Maras, which are often an astounding sight during the dry season. An immersive gourmet experience at MIL Centro.

The Fortress was first a place of worship, as well as a location for studying astronomy. It was here that Manco Inca defeated the Spanish in 1538 before fleeing to the mountains of Vilcabamba. The 16 massive terraces spread before you are a testimony to the magnificent Inca masonry.

Climb the steep stone steps up to the imposing fortress at the top of the mountain – around 260 steps! From there, the view down the valley is superb and you can admire the huge monoliths that form the Temple of the Sun.
