Day 1: ARRIVE BUENOS AIRES

Welcome to Argentina!

Begin your Argentina & Chile adventure with a stay in Buenos Aires.

Soak up the atmosphere of the city with a highlights exploration. Buenos Aires combines the ambience of an old European town with the features of a Latin American capitol. Acquire a deep understanding of its characteristics, its history, its architecture, its culture, and its best stories.

Take in the barrio of Recoleta, with its scent of French charm, elegance and home of many of the city’s most impressive mansions. Highlights will include one of the most treasured cultural attractions, the Recoleta Cemetery, and El Ateneo Grand Splendid, one of the biggest bookstores in South America and certainly the most luxurious. Drive along Callao Street to the intersection with the never-sleeping Corrientes Avenue brings you to the most emblematic symbol of Buenos Aires: the Obelisk. You will also pass by one of the widest avenues in the world, namely, 9 of July Boulevard as well as the famous Teatro Colón. You will also get to know the historical Plaza de Mayo, Metropolitan Cathedral, and Casa Rosada (Pink House). It was from the balcony here that Eva Perón famously addressed the throngs of impassioned supporters packed into Plaza de Mayo.

A stop for lunch will be made so you can enjoy a delicious meal on your own. We recommend Café Tortoni. If you are only going to visit one café in Buenos Aires, the grand Café Tortoni would be a good choice. This quintessential Porteño café located on Avenida de Mayo was founded in 1858 and has remained the meeting place for famous artists and scholars throughout its 154 years.

The square is filled with street performers, including tango exhibitions and on Sundays takes place the “Feria of San Telmo” where the streets are occupied by antiques shops.

Caminito is the main street and provides a great cultural expression and throughout the tour we can also see local artists exhibiting their work. As you gain altitude, the forest of Southern Beech trees begins to thicken, and you can see some parrots and other birds. Soon, you will notice that the Rio Fitz Roy is far below you in the gorge, and you come to your first overlook of the southern towers in the Fitz Roy range. Next you drop back to the river valley where you skirt the north side of a broad river plain while cutting in and out of the forest. Come to undulating fields of boulders and glacial till, then pop over the rim of a well-defined moraine with the powder blue waters of Laguna Torre, and the striking wall of ice that makes up Glaciar Torres. This expedition to the heart of Perito Moreno Glacier is an experience not to be missed. Arrive at Bajo de las Sombras pier and cross the Rico Branch by boat, navigating in front of the glacier. After a short walk to the shelter and complete explanation about ice trek, the trek through the exuberant Magellanic forest begins.

The mountain guides will take you as close as possible to the glacier. After checking your gear and picking up a pair of crampons, set out for about a 1 ½ hour hike along the glacier. Once you reach the access point to the glacier, put on a torso harness and fit the crampons to your footwear to start the ice trekking, arriving at an immense plateau of ice where the view is breathtaking. Spend about 3 hours exploring the glacier’s blue lagoons, deep crevasses, and magical ice caves where everything turns blue, and enjoy your boxed lunch somewhere on the ice. Back on the moraine, you start your descent to catch the boat in the afternoon, sailing as close to the face of the glacier as possible.

Upon return to the Bajo de Las Sombras pier, you are driven to the footbridges. From this point, you can clearly see ice blocks of different sizes continually detaching from the glacier and falling into the water, causing a tremendous sound and amazing waves which makes this view an unforgettable sight.
